Helena Mayor joins race for U.S. Senate

Helena Mayor Wilmot Collins announced Monday that he will seek the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate next fall, becoming the first to challenge incumbent Republican Sen. Steve Daines. Helena’s mayoral elections are nonpartisan, and Collins did not mention a party affiliation in Monday’s speech. However, campaign manager Trent Bolger confirmed Collins will seek the Democratic nomination and continue to serve as mayor while campaigning. Collins defeated four-term incumbent Jim Smith in 2017 to become the first black mayor of a Montana city since statehood.
