Helena federal judge denies request request for jury trial in 10-year-old civil rights lawsuit against FBI

HELENA – A Helena federal judge denied a request Thursday for a jury trial in a 10-year-old civil rights lawsuit filed against the FBI. The suit, filed originally in 2009 by a Billings Native American family following the shooting death of their son, claims law enforcement routinely fails to adequately investigate crimes on Indian reservations. The suit argues detectives ignored evidence in the fatal 2005 shooting on the reservation, which resulted in the killer, a white man, going free, according to a news release Thursday.
