HELENA, Mont. — Montana health officials have reported more than 250 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases in a single day for the first time in over five months. Officials reported 261 new cases on Tuesday, bringing the number of active cases in the state to 942.

Despite the growing caseload Gov. Greg Gianforte stopped short of recommending residents mask up, according to a statement from the Republican governor. The CDC said Tuesday, however, that vaccinated people in counties with high caseloads should return to wearing masks indoors.
