Bill to change the way votes are tallied in local, state, and federal elections being reviewed

HELENA – A bill that could change the way votes are tallied in local, state, and federal elections was introduced during the House State Administration Hearing. A Republican from Missoula, sponsored House Bill 196 to bring back a portion of a 2019 law that allows vote counting to be paused overnight and resume the next day.
Those who oppose the bill cited concerns about staffing shortages, working for days at a time, and the inability to start counting ballots early. The committee is expected to address the issue in the coming weeks.
