HELENA, Mont. (AP) – Montana is one of a handful of U.S. states considering legislation this year to preserve Indigenous culture. The U.S. Supreme Court has yet to rule on whether to leave in place most of the federal Indian Child Welfare Act law, passed in 1978 to prevent Native American and Alaskan Native children being taken from their homes and forced to conform to white society. Most federally recognized tribes want the act upheld, fearing that an adverse ruling could dismantle a whole range of federal laws based on their political relationships with the U.S. government.
