A shortage of behavioral health providers in Montana is being blamed on an ongoing debate about Medicaid reimbursement rates, among Republican lawmakers. A 2022 study found that Montana Medicaid providers were being significantly underpaid. State lawmakers agree the Medicaid reimbursement rates should be raised, but cannot agree on how much, putting a strain on some health providers struggling to hire and retain workers, many of whom are leaving for competitive wages.
