East Helena school board facing budget shortfall after mill levy fails

The East Helena school board is working to figure out how to budget after the district’s mill levy didn’t pass on the May 2 ballot. The district is now left with a budget shortfall, after a $334,000 mill levy increase didn’t pass, East Helena’s Superintendent said at Monday’s meeting. He said the mill levy would’ve provided funds necessary to hire desperately needed teachers, and a maintenance worker for next year, but without the increase they’re dealing with a projected $174,000 deficit. The final budget will be adopted by the board in August.
