Commission says no to demolision of historical Helena home

The Helena City Commission has decided not to approve demolision of an historical home in one of Helena’s oldest neighborhoods. After residents expressed concerns, the Commission voted 3-1 to deny tearing down the Cornelius Hedges house at the corner of Rodney and Broadway Streets and replacing it with an eight-unit apartment building proposed by the investors. With the vote finalized, the building’s owners now have six months to work with the city and other entities to create a plan to renovate the home built in 1878, according to historians.
The building was deemed uninhabitable after a fire in 2018, but was not condemned.
