‘Zoning irregularities’ blamed for some of Montana’s housing shortage

HELENA – What is being called ‘zoning irregularities’ is being blamed for some of Montana’s housing shortage. In Montana’s most in-demand communities more than 70 percent of residential areas either prohibit or penalize the building of multifamily housing, according to a preliminary report released Monday that detailed ways lawmakers could address housing scarcity and skyrocketing costs in Montana, including zoning regulations to allow more duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes in residential areas. The final draft is due to the governor on Oct. 15.
