Missoula man will spend 95 years in prison for fatal 2021 shooting of his father

A Missoula man will spend 95 years in prison for fatally shooting his father at their home in 2021. Colton R. Merritt is charged in the death of, Daniel C. Merritt, 58, who police say was shot 21 times. The 24 year old sat quietly and without emotion in a Missoula County District Court room where he was sentenced on Friday. Colton entered an Alford Plea, and claims he shot his father, a retired Missoula Rural Fire Chief, in self-defense. He will be eligible for parole when he’s about 49.
